Treatment of Abnormal Bleeding

One of the issues some women experience is abnormal bleeding.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is caused by a number of different problems. They can be hormonal, they can be anatomical (something wrong w/your organs), and they can be related to pregnancy and other conditions.

Hormonal issues can include things like polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause, or peuneiopause or sometimes we are just not sure what may cause the problem.

Your doctor may want to do hormonal testing for these conditions.

Anatomical issues can include a variety of things. Uterine fibroids are the most common. These are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus. They are rarely cancerous but can cause abnormal bleeding and pain. These are primarily treated with surgery. They can almost always be identified with ultrasound.

Other causes of bleeding are more difficult to determine. Conditions such as an endometriosis (where the cells from the lining of the uterus got into the peritoneal cavity) can also cause abnormal bleeding. This can only be diagnosed with Laparoscopic surgery.

And finally in the older aged women abnormal bleeding can be a sign of endometrial overgrowth, or cancer. Whenever a postmenopausal woman has abnormal bleeding issues and ultrasound and a biopsy needs to be done, to rule out these conditions which could be life threatening.

This is a quick overview of the many difficult cases of abnormal bleeding. Be sure to relate your symptoms to your doctor and together decide how best to diagnose and treat your condition.
