Treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

The polycystic ovary syndrome is a relatively common condition where the ovaries produce an overabundance of small cysts.  These cysts put out too much estrogen, some of which is converted into testosterone.  This can result in irregular and infrequent periods, acne, increased hair growth over the face, chest and abdomen, and excessive weight gain.  This syndrome can be very frustrating to patients,

and an individual may experience difficulty losing weight, and she may also find that she has an elevated cholesterol and triglycerides.  Some women with this syndrome do not gain weight, but that is not common.

This is a significant condition because it is frustration to the individual, and it can also be a main cause of infertility, and there is an increased risk of uterine cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Fortunately, this condition can be readily treated.  Dr. Helle Bradley and Dr. Jennifer Even are Board Certified OB/GYNs in our practice who have a special interest in the condition.  If this is of concern to you, we recommend that you make an appointment with one of these doctors for a careful assessment and appropriate management.
